‘The Voice’ contestant Frenchie Davis reveals how Christina Aguilera was her inspiration to have thicker skin after her ‘American Idol’ controversy!
Frenchie Davis closed the first live episode of The Voice last night to a crowd of about 1200 people, and she rocked her performance. The former American Idol contestant brought the house down with her “When Love Takes Over” and when she went backstage she couldn’t stop smiling and thanking her coach Christina Aguilera for all of the music and life advice she passed on. Frenchie was booted off Idol after posing for sexy photos at age 19.
“I couldn’t live with that being my legacy,” revealed Frenchie, adding that Christina taught her how to “thicken my skin.”
When asked how it feels to be known for her voice now that she’s performed in front of the world, Frenchie told reporters, “It feels amazing because that’s all I ever wanted. ” She explains, “You know, I think what broke my heart so badly with the ‘Idol’ experience was that when I left ‘Idol’, most of the people remembered me because of the controversy surrounding me leaving the show and if I had no talent, you know if I was just some talentless girl who showed her boobs at 19, I could live with that. But I was born to sing and I just couldn’t live with that being my legacy when God gave me this voice. This show symbolizes for me, win or lose, I get to walk away from this show and be remembered for my voice and that’s all I ever wanted.”
Frenchie explains that Christina is her inspiration. “She gave me wonderful suggestions for my song, you know, a lot of the ad-libs and high notes and things, those were her suggestions. Then also she gave a lot of great insight and advice on just allowing time to thicken my skin because that’s one thing that I’m struggling with. I’m like ‘How? Your thin just seems so thick,’ and it’s like, I read something mean about myself and then I cry about it and then my mother’s like, ‘I’m gonna need you to get over it because everybody ain’t going to like you.’
But Frenchie can already tell she’s stronger after working with Miss Aguilera, who has had to power through public problems of her own this year. ” I even feel like my skin’s gotten thicker during this competition and that’s something I really admire and respect about [Christina]. People say whatever they want about her, she’s still going to come on stage and sing her heart out and she don’t really give a damn and I’m loving that and I strive for that!”
Frenchie had a strong performance last night, and even though she seems to be one of the frontrunners in the competition, the entire thing is still surreal to her. “If you would have told me years ago that one day I’d be singing a Patti LaBelle song with Christina Aguilera, I would have been like ‘You’re kidding!’ And so it’s just been incredible [...] Christina was so proud of me tonight and that meant so much. That meant a lot to me, a lot.”
When The Voice first started we predicted Christina Aguilera would be a positive influence as a mentor to her team and she is obviously already doing so much to guide her girls as they compete against Team Blake, Team Adam and Team Cee Lo!
